Driver's Education

Behind-the-Wheel Instruction is a 7-day course with a fee that is offered after school throughout the school year and with limited availability in the summer. Session times vary depending on Instructor (We have a session that starts at 2:20pm and a session that starts at 3:15pm each day). Students must complete ALL 7 days (7 periods of Driving and 7 periods of Observing). The lesson each day runs less than 2 hours. On the 7th day, each student will complete the Road Skills Evaluation Test, which is required to pass in order to receive a Virginia Driver’s License.

Who is Eligible to Take Behind the Wheel?

To be eligible to take Behind the Wheel students:

  1. Must have a valid Virginia Learner’s Permit
  2.  Must have completed Classroom Driver Education (issued a DEC -District 8 Certificate of Completion Card, also known as the Pink Card)

OR

Be a current Colgan Classroom Driver Education Student. These students may start signing up (in December) as long as they are in good academic standing with the completion of Driver’s Education and have a learner’s permit (Completed all module work, passed the tests, and have attended a 90-minute meeting)

3. Have at least 10-15 hours of driving experience with parent/guardian.

**Please note that registration for behind-the-wheel driver education is on a first-come, first-served basis and here at Colgan HS we work off a waitlist. Students will not be scheduled until their name comes up on the list.

How to Sign Up For Behind the Wheel

Please email Mrs. Viggiani to inquire about Behind the Wheel at [email protected] BEFORE registering and paying. All needed information on prerequisites, paperwork, how to register, and how to pay for BTW will be emailed back. When ALL documents are returned to Mrs. Viggiani, then student’s name is placed on the Waitlist.

How to Register and Pay for Behind the Wheel?

**Please email Mrs. Viggiani at [email protected] BEFORE Registering and Paying to ensure there is still availability on the Waitlist.

Registration:

  • Go to the PWCS Driver's Ed website
  • Click the “Register Now” button
  • Fill out your information
  • Make sure to select Colgan HS for school and Behind-the-Wheel ONLY (Academic year) for the package.

How to Schedule Behind the Wheel

All scheduling will be done by Mrs. Viggiani once a student’s name comes up on the Waitlist. A confirmation email will be sent once dates and times are set.

What is the Process after Behind the Wheel has been Scheduled?

Once the student’s name comes up on the waitlist, Mrs. Viggiani will send a Confirmation Email to both the Student and Parent with the dates, time, and instructors name your student will be scheduled for. Please respond to the email with confirmation. On the Start Date, students need to arrive at the scheduled time and meeting location that is stated in the email with their Learners Permit and make sure to wear sneakers.
