What is “The Courageous Four” Project?
An interdisciplinary performance project involving ALL concentration areas in CFPA
Working with CAPAC
Back in the 1960’s public schools were segregated. The story of the Courageous Four is about the first 4 African American teachers in Prince William County who were asked to teach in the all-white middle schools in the county to start the desegregation process. We are going to be working with CAPAC, a PWC Arts organization to write a musical play that tells the story of these four women. Our February 4th CFPA Master Class will be our first meeting and students will learn about the political and social environment of the segregated 60’s from Mrs. Lillie Jesse, Vice Chair of the PWCS School Board. Then we will delve into the playwriting process from the beginning stages through the end product with Lanny Warkentien, Theatre Instructor at Colgan. We will meet and interview the families of these four women and find out as much as possible to help us start the creative process. Then, we will break for a pizza lunch here at the school. After lunch, students from ALL CFPA disciplines will work together to create “storyboards” based on the information learned from the morning session. This is the first step of the playwriting process.
Gabrielle Munns, CCHS English Department Instructor, will then work with Creative Writing students and those interested in playwriting to create a rough draft of a musical play by spring break. We will also get outside help from dramaturgy students at the college level to help edit the work. In the fall of 2017 we will work with music students to create music for the show, dance students will work on choreography, visual arts students will work on set design, theatre students will be actors, vocal students will participate and music technology students will be called upon as well. We will be presenting this event in February of 2018 for Black History Month.
Be a part of something big. Let’s all work together to make history come to life!
Theatre New York Trip Information
The final payment for the New York trip will be due on or before February 15th. The balance due for students is $299.00 at the quad rate (4 per room).
For adult chaperones, the final payment is based on room occupancy.
If you request a single room, the final payment due will be $499.00.
Double occupancy will be $399.00 per person.
Triple occupancy will be $349.00 per person.
Adults will need to arrange rooming with each other.
Students can now send in rooming requests to Mrs. Nelson at email@example.com. Student rooms will have 4 to a room unless you want to pay the additional charges as listed above for adult chaperones. You would need to let us know right away if you choose this option. If your child does not know who is going, they can ask Mrs. Nelson or Mr. Warkentien and we can help them.
We also need to start collecting medication forms at this time. If your child is on ANY medications which we will need to administer while on the trip- even over the counter meds- we need to have a medication form filled out for each individual med. These forms must be signed by your doctor. Questions regarding medication forms can be directed to our school nurse, Pam Johnson at JohnsoPR@pwcs.edu .
Questions about the CFPA program can be directed to Vicki Burns at Burnsvt@pwcs.edu for Visual Art and Creative Writing queries and Kristina Nelson at firstname.lastname@example.org for Performing Arts.
