Graduation Date

Graduation is currently scheduled for Saturday, June 11th at 9 am. Commencement will be at Colgan High School, in the stadium.

Cap and Gown

Cap and Gown must be purchased by December 15th. Visit Jostens.com to place your order.

The cost for the cap and gown is $40. If you need financial assistance, please reach out to your child's school counselor.

Immunization - (MenACWY)

Meningococcal Conjugate Vaccine Deadline - January 5th

If your senior has not received their Meningococcal Conjugate (MenACWY) vaccine, schedule an appointment with your child's primary care provider.

Seniors must have proof of vaccination by January 5th, 2022.

Students who have not provided proof of vaccination will be excluded from school starting on January 6th. Please visit colganhs.com for more information and contact the school nurse, Mr. Hall, with any questions

College Transcripts and Recommendations

Many colleges and university application deadlines are January 1st.

Please make to request letters of recommendation and transcripts as soon as possible, as winter break for staff and students begin after school on December 17th, and offices are closed through January 2nd

Colgan Internship Experience

What is the internship?

The Colgan Internship Experience is an opportunity for seniors to align their knowledge, skills, and personal interests with potential career opportunities. Seniors are able to build connections in the community within a specific career field, while demonstrating workplace skills, qualities, and behaviors.

Components

  • Seminar Sessions- Seniors will attend at least three seminar sessions, which will be check-ins throughout the year as well as resume and cover letter writing workshops
  • Resume & Cover letter- Seniors will submit their resume and cover letter in Canvas prior to starting their internship
  • Portfolio- Seniors will interview their site supervisor and provide a blog of daily activities in the form of their choice (ex. Website, social media posts, interactive document, etc.)
  • Panel presentation- Seniors will present about their experience to a panel at Colgan following the completion of their internship hours

Timeline

  • Dec. 3- Interest form and field trip form due (includes parent signature and site supervisor’s signature)
  • Dec. 6 & 7- Seminar Session: “I signed up the internship. Now what?”
  • Spring- Seminar sessions: Resume & cover letter writing
  • April 8- Resume & Cover letter due in Canvas
  • End of April- Seminar Session: Check-in prior to start of internship
  • May 16-27 - 60 hour internship
  • May 31-June 3 - Panel presentations, portfolios due

I want to participate in the Internship, so what do I do next

Check Canvas for the necessary forms or grab the printed forms in the main office

  • A business partnership letter is available to take to potential internship sites that explains the program. Students can choose any location. If you need assistance finding locations, please see Mrs. Handville or Mrs. Riddle.
  • Students should complete the interest form and field trip permission form. These should contain both a parent’s signature and a site supervisor’s signature, and can be submitted to Canvas. These forms are due no later than December 3.

Who is eligible for the Colgan Internship Experience?

Seniors are expected to be in good standing academically (on track to meet graduation requirements) as well as with attendance and discipline. Seniors should have at least a 2.5 GPA, or a C or higher cumulative grade at the end of 3rd quarter. Seniors should also have good attendance throughout the first semester, with no more than three absences in the 3rd quarter and no more than 3 in the 4th quarter prior to the internship. Seniors interested in the internship who are concerned about meeting these eligibility requirements should contact Mrs. Handville or Mrs. Riddle.

How does attendance work during the internship?

Seniors are excused from Colgan courses during the two weeks of the internship and are exempt from their final exams upon completion of the experience and portfolio. There may be some exceptions to this based on remaining graduation requirements, AP or DE courses, and CFPA performance-based courses. For non-Colgan courses (i.e. Virtual Prince William, Virtual Virginia) students are still subject to that organization’s attendance and participation requirements/expectations.

Who do I contact with questions?

Counselors will also begin Senior Advisory Meetings on September 9th through government classes. These small group and individual meetings with Dr. Byrd (our College and Career Counselor) and each senior's alpha counselor will give specific information they need on how to:

  • narrow down your post-secondary plans
  • navigate Naviance Student
  • request your transcript and teacher recommendations
  • register for the ASVAB
  • fill out the Common Application and other college applications
  • and much more...

I am interested in the Military. How do I get connected?

Each month, recruiters from different military branches visit Colgan during lunches. Students can also register to take the ASVAB (under “College Visits” in Naviance Student). This fall, the ASVAB will be offered on November 9.

How do I find out about college visits to Colgan?

College visits for 2021-22 are in-person during the school day or virtual after school hours. Students should log into Naviance Student and click “College Visits.” The calendar of visits is posted and updated regularly. Students can register and show their teacher the registration confirmation as a pass to attend during the school day.

What are the Guaranteed Admissions Agreement through Northern Virginia Community College?

Guaranteed Admissions Agreements (GAA) is an agreement between NVCC and specific four year universities. Students completed a transfer degree (AA or AS) at NVCC, maintain a minimum GPA specified by the university, complete a minimum number of credits at NVCC, earn a “C” or better in the degree plan courses, and may be required to submit a letter of intent. Where can I gain more information about colleges and universities to narrow down my list?

Students are encouraged to log into Naviance Student for interest inventories and career assessments in order to determine interesting majors and associated universities. College Super Match and Advanced College Search are available on Naviance Student for students and families to prioritize aspects of colleges that are important, and get matching colleges and universities.


How do I request a transcript?

Parents must first consent to FERPA release in the New Year Packet, under “Online Records” in ParentVUE. This gives Colgan permission to send transcripts to the colleges and universities that students request. In Naviance Student, students can request transcripts and letters of recommendation. Please remember to allow two weeks for staff to send transcripts and letters of recommendation.


Where would I find scholarship information?

Colgan advertises local and private scholarships on the Colgan website (under College and Career, then Scholarships), on the Colgan Counseling course in Canvas, on twitter (@ColganCounselor), and in emails to parents and students. Additional scholarships can be found through searching in Naviance Student. Also, after completing the FAFSA, colleges and universities will send an award letter to the student with offered scholarships, grants, and loans.


I need a fee waiver for the SAT or ACT. Where can I get one?

Students who qualify for free/reduced lunch or have financial need may see Dr. Byrd in the counseling office for a fee waiver to take the SAT and/or ACT at no cost. Fee waivers may also support college application fees.


Do I need to send my test scores to colleges I apply to? Or does Colgan do that?

While test scores may appear on student transcripts, unless the family has opted out, students should also send official score reports to the colleges and universities, when requested as part of the application. SAT scores can be requested to be sent from collegeboard.org and ACT scores can be requested to be sent from ACT.org. If a student would like to remove their test score from their transcript, students should be their school counselor.
