Full time career fire positions begin with an application process.  Our comprehensive selection process includes an entry-level written exam, candidate physical ability test, polygraph, psychological screening, criminal history check, driving transcript, medical exam, drug test, and panel interview.  Successfully completing all the steps of the process will put an applicant on an eligibility list.  From that list our Fire Chief will select candidates that may be offered a position based on the number of position vacancies our department has.  Candidates that accept the position are hired as a Technician I and must successfully complete a 26-week recruit school running Mon-Friday that will certify them with Firefighter I & II as well as NREMT B.

Become a heavy equipment operator and earn an industry recognized credential. The Heavy Equipment Operator program was developed to meet the growing employment demands for equipment operators in the Shenandoah Valley, Northern Virginia and surrounding areas. A heavy equipment operator runs a variety of contractor equipment and trucks used in the construction of buildings, bridges, dams and roads. The primary applications of heavy equipment in construction are in demolition work, earth moving, trench digging, road construction and site grading.

Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center depends on the support of our Junior Volunteers year round. We welcome high school students with an interest in volunteering at our facility to submit an application by clicking the link below.

Interested applicants must be:

  • A rising sophomore, junior or senior in high school
  • Between 14 and 17 years of age
  • Willing to make a 6-month commitment
  • Willing to commit to a minimum of two 3-hour shifts per month

To apply, a Junior Volunteer must submit:

  • An application 
  • A transcript (official or unofficial)
  • A letter of recommendation from a guidance counselor or teacher

Applications for the Junior Volunteer program will be accepted and reviewed twice a year. To be considered, completed applications must be received by 5:00 p.m. on April 12 and September 13. Information must be mailed or delivered to the Information Desk. Faxed paperwork is not acceptable.

Work Permit Procedures

For minors 14 and 15 years of age, a work permit is required. According to the Department of Labor and Industry (DOLI), students and/or their parents will no longer need to visit their local schools for assistance in obtaining a work permit. As of September 11, 2013, instructions and all documents can be found on the DOLI website, HERE.
